Papers of James D'Wolf Lovett contain letters written to Lovett regarding his book, "Old Boston Boys and the Games They Played," on the history of amateur, school, and college-level sports in Boston. Correspondence from members of Lovett's baseball team, the Lowell Nine, among them Gerrit Smith Miller, as well as with Albert G. Spalding, Winthrop S. Scudder, and Henry Chadwick, dicusses the history of baseball and provides anecdotes of the game and "Boston Boys." Also, clippings and reviews of the book; a typewritten paper by Lovett reminiscing about his childhood on Beacon Hill, Boston (1833); letters regarding the Oneida Football Club of Boston, the first amateur football club in the United States; and about a monument to the club erected on the Boston Common. Additional correspondents include Samuel Cabot, Francis G. Peabody, and Henry Cabot Lodge.
